The U of U Wind Ensemble
& Symphonic Band

The U of U concert wind groups are among the premier ensembles of their kind in the country. The U of U Wind Ensemble is conducted by Scott Hagen and the Symphonic Band is conducted by Brian Sproul.

The Wind Ensemble has been recognized by many of the country's finest artists and conductors for its excellence in musicality and tone. Professor Hagen's approach to music making is unlike many conductors; he provides students with a unique ensemble experience rich in pedagogy and emotion. Students in his ensemble often remark about Hagen's ability to not only stress the key elements of sensitive ensemble playing, but accurately quantify and thoroughly explain what it takes to play musically. A former member of Hagen's ensemble says, "Many conductors know how to use the catch phrases and terms with regards to ensemble playing, Professor Hagen actually explains and applies them."

The U of U Symphonic Band is a great ensemble where students gain insightful information as to how to make music and teach music. Many students in the group consist of music education majors, although it is not a requirement for enrollment. The Symphonic Band separates itself from other similar groups in that student accountability other student based musical decisions govern the performance. Rehearsals are very interactive both musically and verbally, making for a collaborative effort.
